Prof. Russell Goodall

Russell is a Professor at the University of Sheffield. As well as a longstanding involvement in doctoral education through several different CDTs, he researches how different elements come together and form alloys, and how different alloys can be made to come together and join. He finds this area fascinating because there are so many possible combinations of different elements in different amounts, that there are high chances of there being undiscovered alloys with better properties than the materials we know about. His research aims to improve our ability to predict the useful alloys that could form from untried combinations, involving less common elements, and to use this to find new materials for Fusion Energy. As many of the materials for fusion are unusual, joining them together, as is vital to make a device, also presents lots of challenges where they can develop new methods.
