Dr Tamsin Whitfield

Dr Tamsin Whitfield is a Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellow at the University of Oxford, with over 10 years experience in the design and development of novel alloys for extreme environments. Prior to her fellowship, she worked in the Materials Division at UK Atomic Energy Authority, leading projects that evaluated the potential of tritium breeding materials and first wall materials, considering operational and safety perspectives. Her research focusses on microstructural formation mechanisms, stability and degradation within compositionally complex alloy systems, linking this to the key properties of the alloys to inform the design, development and optimisation of engineering alloys. Within her fellowship she is studying the effect of phase decompositions within W-based alloys for the fusion first wall, along with other novel metastable alloy systems with the potential to enhance efficiency in aerospace and power applications.
