Dr Ed Pickering
Materials Science Lead and Manchester Link Director
University of Manchester
Ed is a Reader in Metallurgy at University of Manchester. His research group specialises in the experimental metallurgy of steels and high-entropy alloys (HEAs), especially for nuclear fusion and fission applications. Common research topics have included: (i) assessments of processing-microstructure-property relationships in the advanced welding (e.g., electron-beam welding) and additive manufacturing of steels, (ii) alloy design of low-activation HEAs for fusion applications, and (iii) investigating the effect that irradiation has on the deformation behaviour of steels. He is also collaborating with UKAEA to develop in-situ synergistic irradiation testing capabilities for the UK (e.g., irradiation + temperature + stress). His group is fortunate to enjoy access to state-of-the-art characterisation facilities at Manchester’s world-renowned Electron Microscopy Centre, as well as advanced processing equipment through the Henry Royce Institute.
