Co-hort year: 2025
My name is Chris Manning and I’m a part of the materials strand of the FusionCDT working towards a PhD on “Hydrogen Retention and Release from Irradiated Divertor Materials, Copper and CuCrZr Alloy: a Simulation Study”.
My project will investigate the use of Copper-Chromium-Zirconium alloys in the walls of the divertor (used to divert impurities and helium ash from the reactor). I’ll be modelling how the neutrons from the fusion reaction damage the crystalline structure of the alloy and how hydrogen isotopes interact with this damage. I am under the supervision of Professor Chris Race (University of Sheffield) and Dr Mikhail Lavrentiev (UKAEA), working at the University of Sheffield.
I completed my MEng in Chemical Engineering with a Year in Industry at the University of Sheffield, my masters project involved designing, modelling and 3D printing a microfluidic device for the synthesis of silk fibroin nanoparticles.
