Please join us in congratulating Ann-Marie Norton as she has recently passed her viva!
Ann-Marie’s thesis is titled “Textural evolution of dynamically compressed materials and the progress towards High Repetition Rate experiments”.
‘It investigated the structural evolution of materials under extreme conditions by utilising high-repetition-rate laser shock compression and X-ray diffraction at the European XFEL. By developing novel forward-modelling simulations, I was able to confirm that the α(BCC) – ϵ(HCP) phase transition in iron follows the Burgers mechanism. I also demonstrated a high-throughput targetry solution using a tape-drive system and isolated slurry targets. This work successfully captured the high-pressure behaviour of iron, silicon, and copper and explored the recent progress toward making 10 Hz high-energy-density experiments a reality.’
Fantastic, well done Ann-Marie!
