What is the Fusion CDT?
The Fusion Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) is an innovative and forward-looking programme designed to prepare the next generation of fusion scientists for leadership roles in the global pursuit of fusion energy. Building on the world-leading reputation and infrastructure of our current Fusion CDT, we are committed to training over 100 scientists from diverse backgrounds, equipping them with the technical expertise and transferable skills necessary for success in both public and private fusion programmes, as well as in the emerging supply chain.
Why Fusion Science Needs a Diverse and Highly Skilled Workforce
Fusion energy holds the promise of providing a safe, sustainable, and zero-carbon energy source for the future. To achieve this goal, it is crucial to cultivate a diverse pool of highly trained scientists who bring varied perspectives and ideas to the field. The Fusion CDT is dedicated to fostering inclusivity, ensuring that our students represent a wide array of backgrounds, experiences, and viewpoints, all of which are essential for innovation and progress in fusion research.
Comprehensive and Cohort-Oriented Training
The Fusion CDT offers a unique, cohort-oriented training programme that spans across six leading UK universities. Our curriculum is meticulously designed to cover key areas such as materials science, plasma physics, magnetic confinement fusion, and inertial fusion energy. By working together in these diverse cohorts, students benefit from collaborative learning environments that mirror the interdisciplinary nature of fusion research.
Collaboration with Industry and International Partners
The Fusion CDT is supported by a robust network of over 20 partners, including private industry and national and international laboratories. This extensive collaboration ensures that our students are not only at the forefront of academic research but are also deeply engaged with the practical, real-world challenges of bringing fusion energy to market.
Preparing Students for Future Careers
Our programme is structured to prepare students for successful careers in the fusion energy sector and beyond. Whether in public or private fusion programmes, our graduates are well-equipped to contribute to the development of fusion as a viable energy source, ensuring the UK’s sustained leadership in this critical field. With over 100 students trained across five intakes, the Fusion CDT is committed to producing the experts who will drive the future of fusion energy.
