Uniting National Talent: The Fusion CDT Careers Event

We recently hosted the Fusion CDT Careers Event, bringing together around 50 researchers from across the UK. The event welcomed Fusion CDT students alongside MSc students and PhD researchers from institutions nationwide for a full day of networking, expert insights, and career exploration.

Dynamic Industry Connections The morning began with rapid-fire elevator pitches in the lecture theatre, giving students an overview of current commercial innovations before they headed into the interactive exhibition area. Students had direct access to top organisations within the field, exploring career pathways, industry challenges, and future roles.

 

Alumni Insights & Keynote Updates The afternoon kicked off with an engaging Alumni Panel chaired by Emma Hume, featuring insights from Andrew Malcom – Neale, Nour Hammoud, and Felicity Maiden. The panellists shared honest reflections on moving from doctoral research into industry/ Post-doc or Fellowship and National Lab roles and offered practical guidance for navigating the early stages of a fusion career.

Following the panel, Professor Howard Wilson delivered an exciting update on the evolving progress of STEP, providing context on where early-career researchers will make a big impact in the future. 

Positive Feedback & Looking Ahead The day concluded with further networking over coffee and tea. Student feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with attendees highlighting the incredible value of connecting with industry partners and calling for similar national gatherings in the future.
