I am a PhD student at the University of Manchester. Tungsten is a candidate material for the UK Atomic Energy Authority ‘STEP’ (Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production) programme. Recent work has shown the presence of tungsten particles in helium plasma alters the response of the tungsten to plasma. The aim of this work is to carry out simultaneous helium irradiation and tungsten deposition on STEP relevant tungsten at a range of temperatures and fluences, and then characterise microstructural changes and correlate this to mechanical properties. This work will be done in collaboration with UKAEA and Australian National University (ANU) and is vital in understanding tungsten performance in existing and future fusion reactors
