I have just finished a 4 year integrated Masters in Physics at Oxford University and have moved to work with Prof. Damian Hampshire in the Durham University superconductivity group. The superconducting wires used in the magnet systems for Fusion reactors are often subjected to large mechanical strain and magnetic fields. It is therefore essential to understand how the superconducting phase behaves in this environment, as a sudden unexpected transition could cause a rapid breakdown of the magnet systems used to confine the Fusion plasma. To this end, my PhD is centred around performing magnetic measurements of the critical current density and upper critical field under strain of high-field superconductors.
